Placing Top 100 in the International Pet Photographer of the Year Awards

Well, this was a bit of a shock, I can tell you!!

A couple of months ago I entered the International Pet Photographer of the Year Awards, organised by the Pet Photographers Club - pretty much on a whim, actually! A few of my friends had been chatting about it & asking which members of our group were entering - and I thought I may as well have a go.

I'd never entered this competition before so didn't really know what to expect. In the end I picked three images that I liked and had done well with the Guild of Photographers, and entered them in the competition without any extra editing.

So you could have knocked me over with a feather when I received the email to say that two of those images had placed in the Top 100 for their respective categories!

From their website: The International Pet Photographer of the Year Awards is an annual celebration of the artistry and skill of professional and emerging pet photographers from around the globe. The Awards have four categories, and each entrant is only allowed a single image per category: Portrait, Open, Pets & the People, and Action.

TOP 100: OPEN CATEGORY

My image of Toto has a very special place in my heart, probably because it took over a year to create the finished image! When I photographed the gorgeous Willis, I knew exactly how the image was going to look in my head, but it took a year of trial and error (and a fair few tears) in Photoshop to actually get it right. (There's a whole other blog on that here)

TOP 100: PETS & THEIR PEOPLE

This shot of Pelucchi & his firefighter friend Tommy is also a very special image, and was actually my favourite image of 2020. Pelucchi is the Barkshire Firefighter and this was taken for his charity calendar of 2021, which was mainly shot at the National Emergency Services Museum in Sheffield.

The Top 25 shortlist is announced towards the end of the month, and while I would love to think these images could progress further, I have no expectations. It would be amazing but I am thrilled with how well these images have done & can't wait to enter again next year!
