One of the runners up from my recent competition was Beethoven, the beautiful kooikerhondje. And yes, I did have to look up the breed as it was one I’d never heard of!!
The name literally translates as “little caging dog” and is a spaniel-type breed originating from the Netherlands, where it was originally used as a working dog, mainly to lure ducks. They were particularly popular in the 17th and 18th centuries and were included in paintings by Rembrandt ant Jan Steen.
The kooikerhondje is still a relatively rare breed in the UK, so it was great to be able to photograph Beethoven!

This beautiful boy is 14 years old and runs around like he is still a puppy. His owner, Crystal, wanted his photo shoot to take place at a country park near to their home, where they have shared many special and happy memories. It was a beautiful sunny day and we had a gentle stroll around the lake together.
Crystal had mentioned that she would like a photo of Beethoven with her son, but to begin with we didn’t have much luck in getting them to sit together. Finally, at the end of the shoot (when two-legged and four-legged paws were tired) we stopped at an open area and sat them both together overlooking the lake. The shot below is my absolutely favourite of the whole session and recently won a Bronze Award in the Guild of Photographers Image of the Month competition.
