I'm thrilled to feature Nicki from Furs Choice Mobile Dog Grooming in my "Meet... in 10 Questions" blog series. Keep reading to find out more about her:
Tell us a little about yourself in a few brief sentences
I was born & raised in Cardiff & moved to Leicester after I finished university. I worked as a police officer for over 15 years before I started dog grooming. I volunteer for the Cinnamon Trust walking dogs for the elderly & I currently have 2 dogs (& a cat) of my own.
What is your favourite doggy character in a film/book & why?
Samantha - I am legend. She is a strong & loyal "female lead role" that perfectly encapsulates the bond between a person & dog.
Share something that not many people know about you
I studied Biomedical Sciences at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff.
What is your dream dog breed and why? Do you now or have you previously owned this breed?
I have a soft spot for big dogs. I've had many Boxers in the past but right now I would love a Standard Poodle. A Poodle I groom, recently passed away - he was magnificent & really left a lasting impression. They are such an intelligent & versatile breed.
When did you start your business and what was your inspiration for doing so?
I was volunteering for the Cinnamon Trust in 2017 when I started walking George. George was a fat, unfit, Golden Retriever who was not in the best condition. I worked hard with his family to get him looking & feeling his best & this meant a trip to the groomers. Having mainly had Boxers in the past, this was a new experience for me. George has a penchant for puddles, the muddier the better, & I decided that I would learn to groom him myself as I could not keep taking him home to his 95 year old dad, looking like a swamp donkey. It all snowballed from there.
In early 2018 I trained with Leicester Dog Grooming & then later in the year began studying City & Guilds at Brooksby Melton College. I set up my own business last year (2019). I have been working independently within Gastall Dog Grooming salon in Kegworth where I have built up a wealth of experience.
My mobile grooming business is still growing but I plan stay & work at least 1-2 days a week at the salon as I think it's important to continue to learn & share tips & techniques with other groomers.
Best piece of advice you have been given
"Good is good enough". Everyone worries about their abilities at some point. I believe it is important to strive to be the best you can be, but it's all too easy to get caught up in perfectionism & overlook good work & effort.
What is your favourite local business / shop / restaurant and why?
I really love Chestnuts Coffee Shop in Oadby. It's a tiny little gem tucked away in the corner of The Parade. The food & coffee is lovely but the staff really make the difference. They are brilliant with the dogs & always make us feel welcome.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
Starting my own business. I was very unhappy in my previous job & decided that rather than accept my fate I would do something to make my future brighter. I has taken a lot of hard work & sacrifice but it has been worth every minute & I am genuinely proud of how far I have come.
What is your perfect day?
A long walk with my boys. I love the Welsh coast & have had some perfect days walking through the woodland mountain areas & beaches with my dogs. There is nothing more perfect than Welsh sunshine (it is a precious rarity) followed by feet up with a large G&T!
Tell us a little about your business and why people should use it?
I provide a holistic approach to grooming your dog. I have a keen interest in dog psychology & anatomy, nutrition, exercise & enrichment as well as coat maintenance & styling. I have studied Tellington TTouch which is a training system that uses bodywork & non-habitual movement to influence behaviour & health.
Grooming for me, is more than just making your dog smell nice & look pretty. I will do my very best to make the process as enjoyable as possible for your pet whilst also making them look fabulous!
I have a smart new state of the art mobile salon with a hydrobath & everything you could wish for to provide a top-end service, with the added convenience of being on your doorstep. The small, secure, contained grooming area is brilliant for larger or nervous dogs that can become overwhelmed in new or busy spaces. For those that have difficulty getting to the groomers or for dogs that can be unsettled travelling, it is the perfect solution.
I am also a trained animal first responder & have been trained in advanced human first aid for over 10 years.
